Pakistan's batter Babar Azam became the leading scorer of Pakistan in a single edition of the World Cup on Friday, breaking Javed Miandad's record of 437 races since 1992. Babar, who missed his second century of the 2019 World Cup with only 4 races with 474 races in what could be Pakistan's last game in the current tournament.
Miandad's record stood the test of time for a long period of 27 years before Babar had it in style against Bangladesh. In the intervening period, former opening hitter Saeed Anwar, who scored 368 runs in the 1999 World Cup, was the only one close to breaking his senior record.
Babar Azam has been in excellent shape at the 2019 World Cup, having struck a century against New Zealand and three fifties. But Babar's exploits may not be enough for his side to qualify for the semifinals.
Pakistan needed to win the launch and hit first to keep their outside chance alive and luck favored Sarfaraz Ahmed at the launch. The Pakistani captain won the draw and did not hesitate to put his team in good batting conditions at Lord's house.
Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said that Pakistan will do everything possible to publish a great total and keep alive their hopes of semifinals. Pakistan, which is in fifth place in the points table with 9 points in 8 games, can still move to New Zealand, which has 11 points in 9 games, to the top four. New Zealand's net execution rate of +0.175 is better than Pakistan's negative account of -0.792.
Pakistan must get a high score, probably its highest total ODI: more than 400 races.
